THE ALABAMA NUMERACY ACT

A QUICK GUIDE FOR FAMILIES

OUR MISSION:

The Office of Mathematics Improvement is a proactive catalyst for change in K-5 mathematics instruction.

To impact learning and foster a growth mindset, we will support and monitor the effective implementation of curricula, assessments, and evidence-based practices.

As an accountability partner, we will collaborate with stakeholders to improve mathematics proficiency.

What is the Alabama Numeracy Act?
Why do we need it?

The data from recent years indicates that Alabama’s students are missing the basic math skills needed for college, career, and life. The large population of students who are underprepared will impact the future of our state. As a result, the Alabama Numeracy Act was established in 2022 to improve math instruction and provide support for all K-5 students and teachers across the state to ensure that all students are proficient in mathematics by the end of 5th grade.

How will families be informed of their children's progress?

The mathematics teacher of the student receiving mathematics intervention will provide reports that coincide with each grading period.

These reports will contain information about the identified mathematics deficiencies, the intervention(s) provided to the student, student growth, and strengths.

A report from an assessment that includes the above information may be provided to the parent/guardian in lieu of a separate report.

How can families help?

Incorporate math into everyday activities like cooking, shopping, measuring, and budgeting. Involve children in tasks that demand measurements, calculations, and comparisons.

EVERYDAY MATH ACTIVITIES:

Play math-related games that are both fun and educational. Board games, card games, and online math games can help reinforce math skills while making learning enjoyable.

MATH GAMES:

Engage in discussions about math concepts, problems, and solutions. Encourage children to explain their thought processes when solving math problems and pose open-ended questions to stimulate critical thinking.

MATH TALK:

Families can play a crucial role in supporting and enhancing a child's math learning at home. Remember, the goal is not just to teach math skills but to foster a love for learning and problem-solving. Making math a part of your daily life and creating a supportive learning environment at home can help children develop strong math skills and a positive attitude towards the subject.
